There was a place in the caves, a bomb like shelter chamber that had taken weeks to clear of rocks and debri. The one place that all 45 members of our 'large' community could gather round a keg and get their party on. Okay, not really...it was more of a meeting room, a big and rocky room that Naeva had begged me go check out while babbling about books and brains. If I found a book...I was gonna brain something alright, preferably him for waking me up in the middle of some of the best sleep I had gotten for days. Now say...I had been having sex, I could forgive him for disturbing me, but sleep was harder to get than sex these days...I had my priorities. Oh my god...I did not just think 'sleep is better than sex'.
So, I had pulled on my pants, if you could call them that. They were just a shapeless set of sheets fashioned into baggy leggings like pants and held up at the waist with a drawstring. Then I made my way out of my 'nest' insulting Naeva's mouth's mother all the way.
As I ducked under the entrance way to the chamber I ran my hands over my face and then looked up. I think my eye went all anime as I saw somebody who I knew had been dead for many many years. I stared at him for a moment. "Oh my god! Giles! You're, You're...hairy!"
Okay...so it's the first thing that came out as I rushed forward to hug the oldish man.
As my eyes adjusted to the darkness, I saw that it was Xander. I was frozen in place when he hugged me, although I remembered a time when I would have (even when I was fully clothed). Instead, I returned the hug. I never thought I'd see him again, or any of my friends, for that matter. On hearing the 'hairy' comment, I had to suppress a chuckle. Still the same old Xander.
"Xander... what happened?" I asked softly. "Did you resurrect me?"
It was Giles, living breathing Giles. And he had all his guts still in him too. Which was a plus. I realized I was clinging to the man, no wait..the naked man. I backed up a bit and then hugged him again. "You died and then then the whole world went to hell and everybody died and then this little gay guy who looked like a girl, I'm talking curves, long hair, and all, he woke me up and he sees things and shit to make a long story short everybody is still living and everybody is perfectly beautiful and we have to eat berries and grain and-" I paused. I was babbling, I hadn't babbled in years, and it actually felt good.
"Oh no, big no on the resurrecting front, mojo and me do not mix but I think Nav might have some more info." I moved to throw and arm over Giles's shoulder. "You're alive...last time I saw you...you were wearing your guts for skin..." Continuing to babble about nothing and yet everything I led the G-man towards the living area of the caves, a small crowd of pale and curious people starting to gather.
It was wonderful to listen to the young man babble again. Just like the old times.
I remembered flashes of the final battle. That day, out in the battlefield, when I...
But... he said... everyone died. And the whole world went to hell... "Buffy and the others. They're all gone?" I looked down, knowing what the answer probably was. "I imagine I must've cause a great deal of grief," I said, bitterness in my voice. "I was the first one to die... I was weak and, I-I failed them."
I knew what they say, 'no use crying over spilt milk'. What's done was done, and there was no way to change any of that. But I still couldn't help feeling guilty. I was useless when the final battle came.
And yet, I was brought back. There must be a reason for this.
"Well..." I started, clearing my throat, seeking a change of subject. By then, a crowd had gathered, looking at us curiously. My cheeks flushed with embarrassment. I tried to avoid looking at them. "... uh, perhaps we could find some clothes for me. I'm a little uncomfortable walking around stark naked, to be honest," I said, mustering a small smile.
I frowned, listening to Giles speak about failure, but I held myself back into launching into a 'that's bullshit' rant as I watched his facial expressions carefully, giving the man his moment of reflection. He was entitled to that much, I mean god knows I needed time to come to terms with A. Being alive and C. Waking up...in hell.
I shook my head a grinned as I heard the murmurs of awe and shock from the crowed and then looked to Giles, laughing softly at his clothing request. "Jeera..." I gestured towards a small woman holding a small boy on her hip. "This is Giles..." I spoke slowly, watching her translate the information in her head, a bit of confusion flickering over her delicate features as she moved forward...no wait, 'glided' forward.
"Giles, this is Jeera...and little Giles." Introductions made I smiled and looked between the two. "Right...Giles need some pants." Then I saw comprehension spark in the small black haired woman's grey eyes. She nodded and said eyes studied Giles carefully, her eyes brows raising and something akin to being impressed flickered over her features.
I did not envy Giles then...not at all. I resisted the urge to snicker...just barely.
I gave her a smile and followed the customary greeting procedure of shaking hands, as Xander introduced us. I picked up on something Xander said and looked at him, confused. "... little Giles...?"
Noticing Jeera's eyes on me, I flashed a brief smile at her, well aware that she was examining me, and a little uncomfortable under her scrutiny. Leaning over to Xander, I whispered, "I surely hope that's just her way of taking measurements."
